TheBed Bath & Beyond CFO died after plunging from a high-rise apartment in Manhattan on Friday at 12:30 p.m. The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Bed Bath & Beyond has been found dead near a well-known skyscraper in New York City. This tragedy occurred at a time when the company is facing significant financial difficulties, affecting thousands of people.
Gustavo Arnal, 52, is the chief financial officer at home goods retailer Bed Bath & Beyond. In 2020, when the retail industry was shaken up by the coronavirus pandemic, he was hired to help stabilize the company so that it could increase production to meet customer demand.
According to the New York City Medical Examiner's Office, Mr. Arnal's death was ruled a suicide. He was discovered close to his home at 56 Leonard Street, a building known as the "Jenga Building" due to its stacked architectural design. The New York Police Department said in a statement that it "appears to have sustained injuries consistent with a fall from a height."
The Jenga Tower is an 821-foot-tall skyscraper on New York's Leonard Street that is considered the tallest building in Tribeca. It was designed by Herzog & de Meuron, a Swiss architectural firm.
In May 2020, Mr. Arnal became Bed Bath & Beyond's new chief financial officer after former CEO Mark Tritton resigned in June. Mr. Arnal has spent over 20 years in the business world, most recently as the chief financial officer for Avon. This is before that in executive roles at Walgreens Boots Alliance and Procter & Gamble.
Bed Bath & Beyond Inc's independent board chair, Harriet Edelman, said in a written statement:
I wish to extend our sincerest condolences to Gustavo's family. Gustavo will be remembered by all he worked with for his leadership, talent and stewardship of our Company.
The chairman continued:
"I am proud to have been his colleague, and he will be truly missed by all of us at Bed Bath & Beyond and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. Our focus is on supporting his family and his team and our thoughts are with them during this sad and difficult time. Please join us in respecting the family's privacy."

Conclusion

The police have been tight-lipped about the specifics of the case, but all indications point to the death being the result of a suicide, and there is no reason to suspect foul play. The company also announced a week ago that it was going to reduce its workforce by 20% through layoffs, in addition to closing 150 locations.
