The casino atmosphere is a unique experience and few other venues come close to combining glamour, gambling and luxury in quite the same way. In fact, many of the world’s great casinos have become landmark tourist attractions in their own right, so to celebrate the real-world casino, here are the venues that we think can claim to be among the best in the world.

MGM Grand Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, USA

There are few more famous landmarks in Las Vegas than the casino at the MGM Grand, one of the most storied venues in the world. Known for its poker and slot machines, as well as its long history of association with the entertainment industry, these days it is just as popular for its sports betting facilities, including a huge sports betting site featuring no fewer than 60 television screens. Combining the best of modern gambling with the glamour of history, this is an iconic casino.

SkyCity Casino, Auckland, New Zealand

The SkyCity casino in Auckland is part of the impressive SkyCity entertainment and hotel complex, owned by SkyCity Entertainment Group, one of New Zealand’s large companies. Built in 1996 and refurbished in 2006, this remarkable casino venue includes an impressive 1,600 gambling machines and 100 gaming tables, as well as an array of VIP rooms. The wider complex also features a convention center that has hosted some prestigious boxing bouts, an esports broadcasting center and a huge hotel, making it one of the biggest and most successful casino venues in the world.

Foxwoods Resort Casino, Connecticut, USA

And speaking of huge resorts, they don’t come much bigger than the Foxwoods Resort in Connecticut, which is on a scale that has to be seen to be believed. The resort includes an astonishing 38 restaurants, two golf courses and a variety of exclusive villas. But at the heart of Foxwoods is the casino itself, the second biggest in the USA, extending over 350,000 feet of gambling space and featuring 380 gambling tables, 6,300 slot machines and a massive bingo hall.

Sun City, Rustenburg, South Africa

If you’re looking for luxury and opulence, then look no further than Sun City, one of the most extravagant resorts in Africa, and one of the continent’s finest casinos. You can enjoy all the casino classics at the Sun City casino, as well as a Salon Prive for those who like to bet big – although you will have to dress for the occasion. The casino even caters for beginners, through a gaming school that also gives you pointers on casino etiquette. And if you need a break from the casino action, there’s a water park, golf courses and even a trip to a spectacular local game reserve.

Grand Lisboa Casino, Macau, China

Some casinos are not just impressive inside but make a statement architecturally, and that is certainly the case with the Grand Lisboa in Macau, Asia’s foremost gambling hub. This casino is the tallest building in the city, crowned with an enormous LED dome, the largest in the world, consisting of more than a million LED lights. That promise of opulence and grandeur is fulfilled inside the casino itself, with more than 1,000 slot machines and 800 gaming tables, and regular shows to keep visitors entertained.

Monte Carlo Casino, Monte Carlo, Monaco

Las Vegas and Macau may have become the dominant gambling centers of the world, but neither can match the combination of glamour, sophistication and wealth represented by Monte Carlo. The venue is more than 150 years old and is positively dripping with class and charm. Visited by high rollers and celebrities, the casino offers a fabulous array of games, including Chemin de Fer and Trente et Quarante, and there are plenty of Salons Prives for those who want a little exclusivity. And when you’re tired of the casino, there is the stunning town of Monaco to explore.

Bellagio, Las Vegas, USA

Created by world-famous casino specialist Steve Wynn and costing an eye-watering $88 million to build, the Bellagio is rightly considered to be one of the world's most notorious casinos venues, even featuring on screen in movies such as Ocean's Elevenand 21. When it comes to gaming, this casino is probably best known for its variety of high-class poker rooms that offer sky-high limits, and which are regularly used to host major World Poker Tour events. Away from the poker tables, there are more than 2,000 slot machines, some of which have jackpots as high as $2m, as well as an opulent resort that features a huge lake, spectacular dancing fountains and a variety of exclusive stores.
