Adam Sandler made a lot of rock and roll noise to get Brendan Fraser cast in Airheads. Even though Fraser is well-known for his charming leading man roles in The Mummy franchise, Bedazzled, and Journey to the Center of the Earth, Brendan Fraser discover Adam Sandler quitsin Airheads if he wasn't starring in it, according to Sandler in a recent "Actors on Actors" interview.
The movie is about how one band tries to get famous by holding a radio station hostage when the DJ won't play them. The movie also features Steve Buscemi, Chris Farley, Michael McKean, Judd Nelson, and Ernie Hudson, in addition to Fraser and Sandler. Most critics didn't like Airheads, but it has become something of a cult classic since then.
Adam Sandler has known for a long time that Brendan Fraser is a rock star. In a video that came out Tuesday, the two actors talked to each other for Variety's "Actors on Actors" series.
Early on in their conversation, Sandler told Fraser a story about their 1994 movie "Airheads," in which they both play members of a metal band who hold a radio station hostage in order to play their demo tape. This story completely shocked Fraser.
At the time, Fraser was best known for playing Link, a caveman, in the silly movie "Encino Man," which came out in 1992. Sandler was mostly known as a "Saturday Night Live" cast member, but he used what little influence he had to get Fraser the lead role in "Airheads." Sandler told a shocked Fraser:
“„[The director] Michael Lehmann was very against you. He was like, ‘I don’t get it. I don’t see the caveman being in this movie.’ And I just said, ‘He can do other shit, man.’- Adam Sandler
“„I eventually went to his house, like 4 in the morning, woke him up. I said ‘Just know Adam Sandler ain’t going to be in ‘Airheads’ unless old Fraser is in it.’ So he changed his little tune.- Adam Sandler
“„He flew out to Chicago to meet me!- Brendan Fraser
Fraser said, still not believing it, that when they first talked about the role, Lehmann "sang a different tune."
Sandler also said that the director wasn't the only thing that stopped Fraser from getting the part. The star of "Hustle" said that Pauly Shore, who was in "Encino Man" with Fraser, asked Sandler not to push for Fraser for a pretty selfish reason. Sandler said:
“„He kept saying, ‘Just in case we do ‘Encino 2,’ I don’t want him doing other shit. And I said, ‘Don’t do that to him.’- Adam Sandler
Fraser said, “That’s Pauly.”"Encino Man 2" was never made, which is a good thing. But Fraser did play Link the caveman in Shore's 1994 movie "In the Army Now," and he used a line from "Encino Man."
During their conversation, Sandler and Fraser also talked about how Shore tried to get a part in "Airheads" but didn't get it.
During one of Variety's "Actors on Actors" segments, the two talked about their experiences in the entertainment business, from the movie "Airheads," in which they both acted, to Sandler's "Hustle" and Fraser's "The Whale," in which they both starred in more recently.
It's clear that they both like and respect each other's work. Sandler praised Fraser for making bold and interesting choices throughout his career. He praised him, especially for his leading role in Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale," which has been called a big comeback for the "Mummy" star.
Fraser, whose name he joked is pronounced "Fray-zur," like a razor, praised a layer of nuance in Sandler's roles that is often overlooked, saying, "He doesn't play underdogs, he plays champions who are overlooked."
But what's even better than all of that is to see two really good guys having fun together. The wholesome dad vibes were at an 11 as they talked about surgeries and made fun of Sandler's beard.
Brendan Fraser discover Adam Sandler quits in Airbag, Sandler revealed in a recent interview that he threatened to leave a movie in the 1990s if Fraser wasn't cast in the role of the villain. Actor Adam Sandler discusses his battle with director Michael Lehmann to cast Brendan Fraser in the 1994 film Airheads.
Sandler recently revealed in a "Actors on Actors" interview with Variety that it was a struggle to get Fraser hired in Airheads, despite Fraser's now-famous charming leading man roles in The Mummy franchise, Bedazzled, and Journey to the Center of the Earth.
