The tourist town bordering the Arabian Sea is Kovalam, a former small fishing village now transformed into a popular beach destination. It is part of the state of Kerala and part of the town of Thiruvananthapuram, the state capital. The gap between the tourist town and the centre of the capital of Kerala is approximately 16 km, which can be easily covered by excellent road links.
The name of the town is based on an ecological reference. In Malayalam (the dominant dialect of Kerala), Kovalam means "coconut grove." The area was capped, true to its name, by an endless string of coconut trees. The town's early history is somewhat blurred and there are no consolidated records of when the town was founded and how. When Sethu Lakshmi Bayi, the ruling Maharani of Travancore, established a beach resort for herself in one of the town's locations in the 1920s, the most significant event that put the town on the map.The resort is called the Castle of Halcyon and is now a premier luxury hotel. The town was a part of the Princely State of Travancore during that period. The Maharaja of Travancore later used the castle as a refuge for his family and friends, following in her footsteps. The Europeans were among his relatives, who saw the promise of the city's beaches as the most popular tourist destinations. The town still lacked the popularity it deserved, however. During the early seventies, when the hippies began to flock the town, the real shot of the town into popularity grew. The transformation of the town from a casual fishing village to a popular beach destination was actually initiated by their arrival.
The town's beaches are clearly nostalgic. Among the most beautiful beaches are the sun-kissed sandy beaches where the Indian mainland and the vast Arabian sea meet. They are great for spending a relaxing day basking in the sun and enjoying the warmth. These beaches are lined with long chains of shops and shacks where everything can be purchased. Also, near the beaches, there are a variety of hotels in Kovalam. As they are known to offer a relaxing stay along the coastline, these hotels are common choices.
It is easy to access Kovalam, as it can be easily reached via roads, rails and flights. In Thiruvananthapuram, the nearest airport and railway station are located. From the outside of the airport and railway station, one can easily find taxis and cabs to the area. In addition, there are a few decent 3 Star hotels in Kovalam that also provide pick and drop service from the airport and railway station. Although the town sees visitors throughout the year, during September to May, the best time for a tour is.
