Democrats retain control of the Senate after winning a key race in Nevada. The victory gives Democrats a critical number of 50 Senate seats, dealing a blow to Republicans hoping for a "red wave."
Midterm elections are traditionally a referendum on the party in power, and with inflation surging and Mr. Biden's popularity in the doldrums, Republicans were hoping to ride a massive "red wave" and take control of the Senate and House of Representatives.
The wave, however, never got much more than a ripple, and on Saturday, US networks called the key Senate race in Nevada for Democrat incumbent Catherine Cortez Masto, giving the party the 50 seats it requires for an effective majority.

US Midterms - Democrats Retain Control Of The Senate

Democrats Win In Nevada, Maintain Control Of Senate

According to the Associated Press, Democratic US Senator Catherine Cortez Masto has defeated Republican challenger Adam Laxalt, a former state attorney general who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump.
With Masto's victory coming on the heels of Democratic senator Mark Kelly's re-election in Arizona late Friday, the Democrats now have 50 seats in the Senate, while Republicans have 49.
The Georgia race is scheduled for a runoff in December, but even if Republicans win there, a 50-50 split means Democrats effectively control the Senate because the tying vote falls to the vice president, Kamala Harris.
It was yet another setback for Republicans, who had already underperformed in a number of races. The party had hoped for a "red wave" that would sweep across the country and give them control of the upper chamber of Congress. With a few exceptions, including Florida, the wave was more of a trickle.
The Democratic Senate victory is likely to spark more recrimination among Republicans over who is to blame for the poor showing. So far, much attention has been focused on Trump because he backed rightwing or celebrity candidates who lost key races, such as Dr. Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania.

Biden's Standing In Electoral Party

The victory is also a boost for President Joe Biden, who saw his party defy immediate fears that his low popularity ratings and an electorate battered by high inflation would result in a landslide defeat.
The Democrats also defied historical precedent, as the party in power usually loses badly in midterm elections.
The election results are likely to put to rest speculation that Biden will withdraw from the presidential race in 2024 and leave office after only one term. Now, he can point to solid domestic legislation enacted during his first two years as president, as well as a strong midterm performance, to bolster internal party support.
Control of the House of Representatives is still up in the air. Biden admitted that such a victory would be "a stretch" for Democrats, but Republicans have fallen far short of expectations that they would sweep to power in Washington.
Meanwhile, Trump's continued dominance of the Republican Party will be highlighted by the Senate's loss. Some prominent Republican figures have openly urged Trump not to announce a 2024 presidential run, as he is widely expected to do next week.

Conclusion

The ramifications of this unprecedented midterm election result are still being revealed. Donald Trump's political future has been harmed, though the extent of the damage is unknown. Joe Biden's standing within the Democratic Party has improved. The political landscape in the United States looks very different than it did just a week ago.
