Who Is The Inventor Of Modern Toothpaste?

Behind the invention of toothpaste in tubes is Dr. Washington Sheffield, a dentist, scientist, inventor, and entrepreneur. Born in 1827 in North Stonington, Connecticut, he graduated from the Ohio College of Dental Surgery – the first dental school in the United States – and opened his first practice in 1852, quickly becoming one of the nation’s most successful dental surgeons.
In the mid-1870s, Dr. Sheffield replaced the powder used for dental hygiene with a mint-enriched cream, which his patients immediately loved. The idea to package this toothpaste in a collapsible tube came in 1879, inspired by his son, Dr. Lucius T. Sheffield, who saw local artists in Paris using similar tubes for paint. By 1881, they registered the trademark for the first toothpaste sold in the United States, originally called "Dr. Sheffield’s Crème Angelique Toothpaste."
