Stuart Ritchie (born September 10, 1968) is an English film director, producer, screenwriter, and entrepreneur. His credits include British gangster flicks and the Robert Downey Jr.-starring Sherlock Holmes movie.
Ritchie dropped out of school at the age of 15 and worked in the film industry's entry-level positions before moving on to directing television commercials. In 1995, he filmed a short film called The Hard Case, which was followed by his feature-length directorial debut, Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels (1998).
With his second picture, Snatch (2000), he quickly garnered acclaim, both critically and commercially. After Snatch, Ritchie directed Swept Away (2002), a critically criticized box-office disaster starring Madonna, with whom he was married from 2000 until 2008.
He went on to direct Revolver (2005) and RocknRolla (2008), both of which were critically panned. He helmed the box office blockbusters Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows in 2009 and 2011, respectively.
The former received Academy Award nominations for Best Original Score and Best Art Direction. The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (2015), a recreation of a 1960 espionage series, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017), and the live-action version of Disney's Aladdin are among his previous directorial films (2019).
During its theatrical run, Aladdin grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing pictures of the year and the 34th highest-grossing film of all time.
He returned to criminal comedy in 2020 with The Gentlemen (2019), which got generally positive reviews and was a financial success. He directed Jason Statham in the action thriller Wrath of Man in 2021.

The film stars Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer as an American agent and a Russian agent who are compelled to work together to prevent the explosion of a nuclear bomb, based on the 1960s espionage program.
The film did not get the critical acclaim it deserved, but it may develop a cult following based on some of the accolades it received from reviewers. Although films based on television series aren't usually successful, Ritchie's wit and the strong ensemble made this one a fun trip.

This action thriller featured Robert Downey Jr. as the master detective and Jude Law as his loyal companion John Watson as they attempted to foil a plan by a lunatic with magical powers.
The film's size and action were nicely handled by Ritchie, and Downey Jr., fresh off the success of Iron Man, made for an exciting hero. All in all, it was a delightful journey that showed Ritchie was ready for the big screen.

Rocknrolla (2008)

Ritchie chose to return to his origins with a tried and true British crime comedy after a few misfires with critics and viewers. This suspenseful story featured a group of sleazy criminals as they clashed over botched heists, stolen artwork, and an out-of-control rock star.
After some of Ritchie's earlier films, many reviewers felt that this was a welcome move in the right direction. With Gerard Butler, Idris Elba, and Tom Hardy having such much fun, the ensemble supplied a lot of pleasure.
Even though it wasn't up to pace with his previous work, the picture established Ritchie's ability to tell these kinds of tales.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows (2011)

Guy Ritchie directed Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, a 2011 period mystery action film produced by Joel Silver, Lionel Wigram, Susan Downey, and Dan Lin.
It is a sequel to the 2009 film Sherlock Holmes, and it stars Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's characters Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. Michele Mulroney and Kieran Mulroney wrote the script for the film.
Along with Noomi Rapace as Simza, Stephen Fry as Mycroft Holmes, and Jared Harris as Professor Moriarty, Robert Downey Jr., and Jude Law reprise their roles as Holmes and Watson, respectively. In a guest appearance, Rachel McAdams resumed her role as Irene Adler.
Despite having a unique concept, the film combines aspects from Arthur Conan Doyle's short tales "The Final Problem" (1893) and "The Adventure of the Empty House" (1894). The year was 1903.
In the film, Holmes, and Watson journey throughout Europe with a Romani adventurer to thwart an elaborate plan by Professor Moriarty, their clever adversary, to start a war.
Despite mixed reviews from critics, the picture was a financial success, grossing more than $545 million worldwide. A third picture was scheduled to be released on December 22, 2021, with Downey and Law reprising their roles, but its future is unknown.

Lock, Stock, And Two Smoking Barrels (1998)

While Ritchie's films haven't always been well received by reviewers, his debut movie won him a lot of them over. Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels was a crime comedy about a bunch of pals who owe money to a mobster and plan to rob their drug dealer neighbors.
Several concepts that Ritchie would utilize later in his career were introduced in this film. The streetwise protagonists, the intertwining stories, and the high-octane pace are all present. Though his subsequent films didn't always get the same critical praise, this was a strong start.

Despite a $175 million production budget, the picture earned $148 million worldwide.

Aladdin (2019)

Aladdin is a Walt Disney Pictures musical film released in 2019. It's a live-action/CGI version of Disney's 1992 animated picture of the same name, which is based on the titular story from One Thousand and One Nights, directed by Guy Ritchie from a screenplay he co-wrote with John August.
Will Smith, Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, Marwan Kenzari, Navid Negahban, Nasim Pedrad, Billy Magnussen, and Numan Acar appear in the film, which also has Alan Tudyk and Frank Welker reprising their roles from earlier media.
The story follows a street urchin named Aladdin as he falls in love with Princess Jasmine, meets a wish-granting Genie, and fights the evil Jafar. Disney announced in October 2016 that Ritchie would helm a live-action version of Aladdin.
In July 2017, Smith became the first member of the cast to join, coming on to play Genie, and later that month, Massoud and Scott were confirmed for the two main parts.
Principal shooting started in September at Longcross Studios in Surrey, England, and continued through January 2018, with additional filming in Jordan's Wadi Rum Desert. In August 2018, further filming and pick-ups took place.
On May 24, 2019, Aladdin was released in theaters throughout the United States. It earned well over $1 billion globally, making it the ninth highest-grossing picture of the year.
Critics gave the picture mixed reviews, praising the soundtrack, costume design, and performances of Smith, Massoud, and Scott, but criticizing Ritchie's directing and Kenzari's Jafar portrayal. A sequel is in the works.

Revolver (2005)

Guy Ritchie co-wrote and directed Revolver, a 2005 British-French criminal thriller starring Jason Statham, Ray Liotta, Vincent Pastore, and André Benjamin.

Ritchie's fourth major picture, and his third to focus on crime and professional criminals, has a significant philosophical and Buddhist moral component. On September 22, 2005, it was released in UK theaters.
It garnered mixed reviews and a dismal box office performance, but it has developed a tiny cult following among fans of Ritchie's other crime flicks. On December 7, 2007, a revised version was released in a limited number of US theaters.
