Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin, Emma Roberts, Saoirse Ronan, Chloe Grace Moretz, Jodelle Ferland, Lyndsy Fonseca, Emily Browning, Shailene Woodley, Kaya Scodelario, and Troian Bellisario were among the 30 actresses who auditioned or read for the role of Katniss Everdeen, according to Lionsgate in March 2011. Jennifer Lawrence (who was shooting X-Men: First Class at the time) was revealed as the winner on March 16, 2011.
"You got the feeling that this girl understood precisely who she was," Ross said of Lawrence. "And then she came in and read for me and absolutely knocked me out; I'd never seen an audition like that before in my life; it was one of those moments when you just see your entire movie in front of you."
Despite the fact that Lawrence was four years older than the character when the shooting started, Collins stated that the part required "a certain maturity and strength," and that she would prefer the actor to be older than younger.
Lawrence was the "only one who really caught the character I created in the book," she said, and she had "every fundamental attribute required to portray Katniss." Lawrence, a book lover, was first frightened by the scale of the production, and it took him three days to accept the part.
Other than Josh Hutcherson, Alexander Ludwig, Hunter Parrish, Lucas Till, and Evan Peters were considered for the part of Peeta. David Henrie, Drew Roy, and Robbie Amell were among the other performers considered for the part of Gale.
John C. Reilly was in negotiations with Lionsgate in April 2011 to play Haymitch Abernathy. The following month, Lionsgate announced that Oscar candidate Woody Harrelson had been cast in the lead role.
Soon after, Grammy winner Lenny Kravitz, Oscar contender Stanley Tucci, and Toby Jones were cast as Cinna, Caesar Flickerman, and Claudius Templesmith, respectively. Donald Sutherland, a double Golden Globe Award winner, was cast as President Coriolanus Snow in late May 2011.
The primary protagonist of The Hunger Games is Katniss Everdeen, also known as "the girl on fire." She is 16 years old at the start of the first novel, silent, self-reliant, and fearless.
She has long black hair (which she typically braids), olive complexion, and gray eyes, all of which are described as characteristics of inhabitants of District 12's coal mining area known as "the Seam." Primrose Everdeen is named after an aquatic plant with delicious underwater tubers, and she lives with her mother and younger sister (nicknamed "Prim").
Katniss was forced to become the mother figure when her father died in a mining accident many years earlier, requiring her to utilize the hunting skills given by her father to feed the family. Because she is so acquainted with the forest, her favorite color is green.
Katniss chooses to take Prim's place when she is "reaped" (selected by lottery) as a "tribute" who must battle twenty-three other tributes to the death in the 74th Hunger Games. She and her co-tribute Peeta Mellark, who is in love with her, survive the game.
When the Gamemakers break their pledge to allow two surviving tributes from the same district survive, she opposes and humiliates the government by threatening a double suicide with Peeta, becoming President Coriolanus Snow's personal adversary.
In the second book, Catching Fire, she is forced to compete in the Hunger Games the next year, a particularly cruel version known as the Quarter Quell, which takes place every 25 years.
She smashes the force barrier enclosing the Games arena and is freed by members of an underground revolt led by the allegedly destroyed District 13 together with a few surviving tributes.
She becomes the Mockingjay in the third chapter, an inspiring emblem of a second civil battle against the Capitol. Despite her restricted position as a propagandist, her fixation with killing Snow draws her into battle. As the conflict continues, she realizes that President Alma Coin, the rebel leader, is just as cruel and power-hungry as Snow.
Katniss discovers that Coin regards her as disposable, fabricated a fictitious Capitol tragedy that kills Prim, and pushes for a final Hunger Games employing the offspring of Capitol war criminals after the conflict.
When Katniss is eventually given the opportunity to murder Snow, she chooses to kill Coin instead. She is found not to be mentally ill and is sent back to District 12, where she suffers from trauma and suicidal despair.
Peeta's homecoming lifts her from her funk, and she realizes she has fallen in love with him. She marries him, but it will be another fifteen years before she is ready to have a family. She has a daughter and a boy when she eventually has children.
Katniss Everdeen is the main protagonist and the narrator of The Hunger Games trilogy.
In both the 74th and 75th Hunger Games, Peeta Mellark is the male tribute from District 12. He's Katniss' age, with a pale complexion, blond hair, and blue eyes, which are typical of District 12 inhabitants, whose middle-class merchants are somewhat more prosperous than those of the Seam. Peeta, the baker's kid, has two elder brothers, a quiet father, and a stern disciplinarian mother. Peeta prefers the hue orange, which he associates with sunsets rather than Effie's hair.
Physical strength, personal appeal and charisma, public speaking, cookery, and painting are among his talents. He's also renowned for his charity and friendliness. Katniss' impulsiveness is balanced by his intelligence and thoughtfulness.
Peeta has loved Katniss from the first time he saw her in elementary school, and he expresses his feelings for her during the pre-Games interview. Katniss thinks this is a ruse to enlist the aid of sponsors in order to make it through the Games.
Peeta rescues Katniss and her family from starvation when they are young by giving her food that he had inadvertently burned and for which his mother had punished him. Katniss has dubbed him the "boy with the bread" ever since. He meticulously devises a plan to defend Katniss during the first game.
He professes his love for Katniss on TV as part of the plan to make her seem attractive so she can get sponsors. He also chooses to join forces with the Careers and deceive them about Katniss. When the careers learn of this, Peeta fights with them to rescue Katniss, but he is badly injured in the process.
Peeta Mellark, a baker's son from District 12, is the deuteragonist of the The Hunger Games trilogy.
Gale Hawthorne is a two-year-old Seam resident boy who has Katniss' hunting ability, black hair, olive complexion, and gray eyes. They've become close buddies as a result of their hunting adventures. Gale, who is muscular and attractive, has piqued the interest of many District 12 females.
After his father died in the same mining accident that killed Katniss' father, Gale now lives with his mother Hazelle and his three younger siblings (Rory, Vick, and Posy). Gale, who hails from the Seam, has a passing resemblance to Katniss.
This enables the inhabitants of the Seam to cover up his close connection with Katniss by claiming they are cousins, obfuscating the fact that the "star-crossed lovers" narrative with Peeta was manufactured since it is assumed her closeness with someone as attractive as Gale would raise suspicion. Despite the fact that their depiction as relatives successfully satisfies the Capitol press, it makes Katniss and Gale uncomfortable on numerous occasions.
Gale Hawthorne was Katniss Everdeen's best friend and hunting partner and one of the main characters.
Haymitch Abernathy is a "paunchy, alcohol-loving, beautiful middle-aged guy" who won the 50th Hunger Games (the Second Quarter Quell) 24 years before the first book's events. He is from The Seam and is described as having dark hair and an olive complexion, similar to Katniss and Gale; in the Hunger Games films, he is depicted with golden straight hair and blue eyes. When Haymitch was 16, he was harvested for the Second Quarter Quell, in which four tributes from each district competed instead of the usual two.
Maysilee Donner, the original owner of Katniss' symbolic Mockingjay pin, became an ally of his, although he was forced to watch her die later. During the Games, he found a cliff at the Arena's edge that hid a force field that ricocheted everything hurled at it.
A badly wounded Haymitch positioned himself at the edge of the force field in the closing minutes of the Games to meet his final opponent, a female tribute from District 1.
Haymitch Abernathy is the victor of The 50th Hunger Games at age 16. He is the second victor from his home district.
Primrose is a flower that blooms in the ("Prim") Katniss has a younger sister named Everdeen. Buttercup, her ugly cat, is her pet. In The Hunger Games, she is 12 years old and has blonde hair and blue eyes. Prim is lovely, kind, and compassionate.
Her mother taught her how to heal and she is a great healer. Prim is selected by District 13 to be educated as a doctor in Mockingjay. Prim is forced to mature and grow more serious as a result of the events in Catching Fire and Mockingjay. Prim is "the one person I'm convinced I love," Katniss says.
Primrose "Prim" Everdeen was Katniss Everdeen's younger sister.
The series' primary adversary is President Coriolanus Snow, the despotic ruler of the Capitol and all of Panem. Despite his laid-back appearance, his mind is cruel and psychotic.
He first appears in The Hunger Games, giving the official welcome at the Games' start, but he does not speak to Katniss until Catching Fire when he pays her a visit at her home and tells her that he is angry that both she and Peeta were allowed to survive the Hunger Games because their act of defiance (preferring joint suicide to the prospect of one killing the other) has sparked rebelliousness.
He threatens her family and Gale unless she demonstrates to the Districts that her act of rescuing Peeta was just that of a love-crazed adolescent and had nothing to do with any intention to oppose the Capitol. Snow later tells her that she failed, implying that some or all of his threats would be fulfilled.
President Snow is characterized as having extremely swollen lips, which are most likely the product of a popular Capitol appearance-altering procedure. He smells like blood and flowers, according to Katniss.
Coriolanus Snow is the president of Panem. He has been the president of Panem since The 20th Hunger Games at the age of 23.
