John Lithgow was born on 19 october 1945 in Rochester, New York. His father, Arthur, was a theater producer and director, while his mother, Sarah, was a retired actress. He had both European and American ancestry .
Lithgow and his family spent a lot of time traveling across the United States as a result of his father's company, finally settling in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Civil rights activist Coretta Scott King kept an eye on him and his siblings while they were there. Lithgow spent most of his formative years in the Ohio cities of Akron and Lakewood.
