The end of 2021 saw the release of a Gallup survey asking respondents what they thought of 11 leaders in American culture. Which leader is most favored? Just 34% of people disapprove of Chief Justice John Roberts, who has a 60% approval rating.
Jerome Powell, the chairman of the Federal Reserve, and Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, came in second and third, respectively, with approval ratings of 53% and 52%.
No elected politician had a rate of approval above 50%; the best-elected official was House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who had a 46% popularity rating.
You may be asking which among the 11 leaders performed the poorest at this stage. None other than Mitch McConnell, who only received 34% of the vote in favor of him while receiving 63% against him.
Democrats dislike him (21% approval), which is hardly surprising. And neither do independents, with only one-third (35%) of them having favorable opinions of the Kentucky Republicans.
None of those organizations, however, is to blame for McConnell's extreme unpopularity. What is? The fact that only 46% of Republicans support him. How awful is that? Republicans have a 71% approval rating for McCarthy, McConnell's counterpart in the lower chamber.
It is easy to understand why Republicans view McConnell and McCarthy so differently from Democrats. In the wake of the 2020 election, McCarthy has gone above and beyond to show his allegiance to Donald Trump. In order to ensure that things between him and Trump were calm, he made a visit to Mar-a-Lago soon after the incident on January 6 at the US Capitol.
On the other side, McConnell harshly criticized Trump for his involvement in the uprising on January 6, 2021 and has made every effort in the year after to forget that Trump ever existed.
Trump, who is never one to overlook a slight (real or perceived), has also started criticizing McConnell. In addition to calling McConnell "Old Crow," Trump apparently had been aggressively hunting for a replacement for the minority leader after the 2022 election.
Do these poor poll results scare McConnell? Without a doubt, not at the state level. He recently won reelection to a seventh term with ease and won't run for office again until 2026.
While some Trump-supporting candidates who have vowed not to support him for leader if they gain seats this November have emerged as a litmus test, McConnell also appears to be in an excellent position in terms of the GOP Senate conference.
