Charges And Incidents

Hipkins revealed that Allan was taken into custody after the car crash and subsequently released at 1 a.m. local time on Monday. New Zealand Police charged her with "careless use of a motor vehicle and refusing to accompany a police officer."
While her actions are inexcusable, I was given information that she was experiencing extreme emotional distress at the time of the incident.- Prime Minister Chris Hipkins
My initial concerns last night were for her immediate safety and wellbeing. It appears that some of her personal struggles came to a head yesterday and were contributing factors in this incident.- Prime Minister Chris Hipkins
Additionally, an infringement notice was issued for excess breath alcohol. The police later confirmed the charges in a statement.

Personal Difficulties And Regrets

In a statement issued on Monday, Allan acknowledged that she had been facing personal difficulties over recent weeks. She took time off to address these challenges but believed she could manage them while fulfilling her ministerial duties.
The car crash, however, revealed otherwise, and Allan expressed regret for not being able to handle the pressure, apologizing to her colleagues for letting them down.
I took time off to address those and believed I was OK to juggle those challenges with the pressure of being a minister. My actions yesterday show I wasn’t OK and I’ve let myself and my colleagues down.- New Zealand's Justice Minister, Kiri Allan
Allan's past experiences with mental health were also highlighted during the press conference. She had previously taken leave from her role and opened up about her struggles with mental well-being.
In a social media post last month, Allan mentioned hitting a wall due to personal circumstances and external factors like the impact of cyclones on the region.

Government Resignations

Allan's resignation marks the fourth minister to step down from New Zealand's center-left Labour government since March, as the national election race tightens ahead of polling day in three months.
Following Allan's resignation, Ginny Andersen will assume the position of justice minister, and Kieran McAnulty will take over her responsibilities as regional development minister.
Grant Robertson will be responsible for coordinating the response to Cyclone Gabrielle, which struck New Zealand in February.

Final Words

New Zealand's Justice Minister, Kiri Allan, has resigned due to facing criminal charges following a car crash.
The incident sheds light on her personal struggles and mental health challenges, prompting her to step down from her ministerial role.
As the fourth minister to resign from the government since March, her departure adds to the political landscape in the run-up to the upcoming national election.
