Have you ever wondered how safe the people who live and travel through Fremont, California, are when they are on foot? This article intends to analyze the various categories of pedestrian accidents in the city and convey some trends from the years 2018 through 2022.

How Bad Are Fremont's Pedestrian Accidents?

When looking at yearly assessments of crash data, the biggest cause of pedestrian accidents comes from drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians. The state of California requires that drivers watch for pedestrians on all roads, not just intersections.
Furthermore, drivers should always reduce their speed when they spot a pedestrian, if only so that they can better avoid colliding their industrial machine into a body of flesh, bone, and organs. Fremont has been focused on minimizing accidents at major intersections like Washington/Osgood and Walnut/Godfrey; two of the most prolific locations for such accidents.
While the number of accidents shrunk during 2020, they have since started climbing but have not yet reached the numbers of the California Transportation Injury Mapping System's (TIMS) pre-COVID-19 reports for the city. Between 2018 and 2022, Fremont saw 235 serious injuriesand a further 19 fatalities.

Fremont's Statistics On Hit-And-Runs

While it is already bad when a driver slams into a helpless person, things can only worsen when those drivers decide to flee the scene. Hit-and-run drivers are a constant nuisance in Fremont, leaving the victims further victimized when it comes to paying for medical care, assuming they do not die from the automotive assault.
Even beyond the obvious problems involved when the perpetrator of an hit-and-run leaves the scene, there is a chance that they injured someone so badly that other drivers may be unaware and collide with the victim. Lastly, hit-and-run victims tend to have a worse time waiting for an ambulance and the perpetrator may never be brought to justice, leaving the victim scrambling to pay for their costly medical bills.
  • There were nine instances of an hit-and-run involving a pedestrian in 2018 and 2019.
  • 2020 saw only four incidents.
  • 2021 marks a rise in incidents; five occurred that year and 2022 had eight.

Comparing California Against The Rest Of The Country

No matter what state you look at, pedestrian accident rates have continued to rise. The Governor’s Highway Safety Administration estimates that roughly 7,500 pedestrianslost their lives in 2022, a 1% increase over 2021's figures and the highest death toll of pedestrians since 1981.
When looking at the results of each state from 2022, California is at the top of the list with 1,100 pedestrian fatalities, followed by Texas (834), and then Florida (824). Note that the state of California has its own separate Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) and its findings accounted for an additional 100 pedestrian fatalities.

What Can Be Done?

When looking at all of the statistics for injuries and fatalities of pedestrians, the greatest piece of advice is to play by the rules. Whether you live in Fremont or just happen to be driving through on your way to some event, always be mindful that a pedestrian could be near where you are driving.
Since nobody wants to hit a random stranger, always abide by the posted speed limit so that you can have sufficient time to stop or move out of the way of a potential pedestrian collision. While every state, and Washington, D.C., needs to work on the problem of pedestrian incidents, the people of California are in a prime position to lower the number of H&R incidents in this country.
