Therefore, it is not a surprise that the first two projected picks for this team are on the offensive side of the ball. Let’s take a look at the projected first four draft picks for Washington in the upcoming NFL draft.
Rashod Bateman, WR, Minnesota
This pick is contingent on the projection that DeVonta Smith is selected by the Miami Dolphins. Of course, if Smith drops to 19, Washington will surely pick Smith. However, this is extremely unlikely, so Bateman is the next best option. At 6’ 1”, Bateman is a crisp route runner, has good ball skills and toughness. Washington is in dire need of another outside threat opposite of Terry McLaurin. Clearly, the likes of Isaiah Write, Cam Sims, and Steven Sims Jr (combined 86 catches, 2 touchdowns) have not been good enough. Bateman caught 60 passes for 1219 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2019 and 36 passes in five games last season.
Alex Leatherwood, OL, Alabama
Leatherwood is an imposing figure presence at 6’ 6” and his versatility will allow him to play guard as well at tackle. He has great experience against top collegiate edge rushers which will make things easier for the ultimate transition to the NFL. Although drafted as a tackle, perhaps Leatherwood will succeed more at the NFL level at guard due to great upper body strength. Should Leatherwood develop into a top guard, the Washington Football Team could boast one of the strongest offensive lines in the league.
Paris Ford, S, Pittsburgh
With the likes of Kamren Curl and Landon Collins manning the safety position, a pick like Ford may seem a bit off-kilter. However, both are safeties that thrive near the box. Ford, on the other hand, is best in pass coverage and has a knack for the ball. Having Ford play next to Curl and Colling transitioning to a backer position would fit brilliantly into Washington’s defensive scheme.
Dazz Newsome, WR, North Carolina
Selecting yet another wide receiver in this year’s draft, the Redskins will find a perfect slot receiver in the 5’ 11” Newsome. He has the speed to go all the way on every play due to excellent quickness, precise cuts and lots of deception. The other players that Washington has tried in recent years to fill the slot position haven’t panned out in Trey Quin and Sims Jr. Newsome has the ability to play outside as well and his versatility will work well in Washington’s offensive philosophy.
