It is extremely hard for someone who has spent years in one industry to successfully switch to another career path. Unless their current industry is dying, many would simply hold on to what they know. However, Rajesh Chennattu Sasidharan Nair breaks the mold, as he has achieved great success and impact in both the Indian military and corporate America.
Rajesh who has been awarded one of the India’s most coveted awards the ‘Global Achievers award’ in 2022, for his outstanding professional achievement and contribution in the field of supply chain and operations management, had found himself at crossroads after his tenure as a commissioned officer came to a close back in 2018. He had spent fourteen years in various roles which helped build his skillset and gave him a better idea about what he was more interested in pursuing when he joined the corporate world.
Having taken upon leadership roles such as Commanding Officer, Officer-in-Charge, and Training Officer, he found his passion in building relationships and guiding his team, as well as brainstorming solutions and implementing those solutions. His stint as Navigation and Direction Officer also allowed him better insights into problem-solving differently. Overall, the strategic operations and management planning that he was involved in prompted him to pursue an MBA.
Upon graduating from the University of Southern California - Marshall School of Business, he jumped at the opportunity to work for Amazon, a giant in the corporate world in terms of commerce and technology. Rajesh enjoyed his new position because it incorporated three of his favorite things: people, process, and technology. “Managing operations at big companies can be tricky as you need to focus on multiple aspects like capacity and staffing planning, forecasting, supply chain management, and human resource development. Rajesh was able to lead the launch of a new $550M Inbound cross-dock building in Southern California with a planned production capacity to 17 Million units/week, making it possible for the team to handle more customer requests than before. For successful launch, Rajesh reviewed and redesigned the equipment fit and machinery at the site and worked with different external project teams to fast track the completion of the project.
The fast-paced working culture at Amazon keeps Rajesh on his toes as he successfully manages and leads a team of senior managers and approximately 3000 associates under him. “Analytics can be used in all spheres and industries. In the business world, analytics and data offer insight into consumer behavior, supply and demand, growth opportunities, and market trends. All of which contribute directly to a product’s success. It’s an integral part of making decisions and sufficient preparation.” He explains, proving that there are always skills that you can integrate from former industries. Today, he leads a 550k Sq ft site that processes over 17 million units a week, and drives innovation at Amazon on different levels, from coming up with new designs to optimizing efficiency on existing products and services, Rajesh has a natural flair for recognizing solutions and navigating through uncharted depths.
“My key strengths are thinking and planning long term, people development, creating innovative solutions and ideas to solve different complex issues, and the ability to deliver results,” says Rajesh who is also a life fellow at the Institute of Directors and a Senior member of IEEE. His hard work, dedication to the task at hand, and his ability to think ahead have made him a leader in his field in a very short period. The experiences he brought from his past career as a naval officer helped him tackle the new challenges he had to face in the corporate world. His determination to succeed has paid off and given us an inspiring story of why it's never too late to start something new.
