Philip Edward Hartman (September 24, 1948 – May 28, 1998) was a Canadian-American actor, comedian, playwright, and graphic designer who rose to prominence in the late 1980s as a regular on the NBC sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live (SNL).
Hartman was born in the Canadian city of Brantford. When he was ten years old, his family relocated to the United States.
Hartman designed album covers for bands such as Poco and America after graduating from California State University, Northridge with a degree in graphic arts.
Hartman joined the comedy troupe The Groundlings in 1975, where he assisted Paul Reubens in the development of his character Pee-wee Herman. Hartman co-wrote the film Pee-Big Wee's Adventure and appeared as Captain Carl on Reubens' show Pee-Playhouse Wee's on a regular basis.
Hartman joined Saturday Night Live in 1986, where he became famous for his impersonation and stayed for eight seasons until 1994.
Hartman, nicknamed "Glue" for his ability to keep the show together and assist other cast members, earned a Primetime Emmy Award for his efforts on Saturday Night Live in 1989.
After refusing to return to SNL, he went on to star as Bill McNeal in the sitcom NewsRadio in 1995. He also provided voices for many characters on The Simpsons and appeared in the films Houseguest, Sgt. Bilko, Jingle All the Way, and Small Soldiers.
