Black holes don't generate light, yet their gravity bends light into a brilliant ring around the cosmic object's shadow.
Asteroid Trajectory Displacement
NASA's first planetary defense test mission ended in September. The space agency smashed into Dimorphos, a tiny asteroid orbiting Didymos. The collision was deliberate. DART was a large-scale deflection demonstration.
Dimorphos and Didymos pose no danger to Earth, but the system proved ideal for testing a technology that may protect Earth from asteroid impacts. DART was the first time humans actively altered a celestial object's motion. In 32 minutes, the spacecraft repositioned the lunar asteroid.

Studying Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs)
2022's skywatching didn't end there. NASA said in June that it will investigate UFOs. The space agency chose a team of specialists in astrobiology, data science, oceanography, genetics, politics, and planetary science.
NASA officials deny extraterrestrial involvement. The purpose is to seriously examine the unexplained but much-discussed issue of UAPs and how they may be explored scientifically.

In January 2014, the first known interstellar meteor impacted Earth, crashing in the northeast coast of Papua New Guinea.
Interstellar meteors are space pebbles that come from outside our solar system, such as Oumuamua, the first known interstellar object discovered in our solar system in 2017.
Space Shuttle Challenger Debris Found
NASA has had several successes this year, but it has also experienced tragedies. For a TV documentary series, experts searched the Bermuda Triangle, where scores of shipwrecks and aircraft disasters happened, in March. However, the researchers found a 20-foot chunk of space shuttle Challenger debris on Florida's east coast, which broke up just after liftoff in 1986, killing all seven crew members. The first shuttle crash was found in 1996.

Ukraine Gets Internet Through Nascent Satellite System
A space-based internet infrastructure that scarcely existed a few years ago provided essential connection when Russia invaded Ukraine in February.
SpaceX developed and launched Starlink. Thousands of tiny satellites orbit Earth a few hundred miles overhead. An easy-to-use Starlink satellite dish connects the world through the satellites.
Musk and SpaceX deployed thousands of dishes to Ukraine. Despite a financing dispute, Ukraine's military's deployment of Starlink was praised as a game changer in strategic communication, enabling it to fight successfully even as the battle interrupted cellular phone and internet networks.
First Private Space Station Expedition
SpaceX's business includes Starlink. The firm launches NASA astronauts and satellites. Axiom-managed SpaceX sent a few affluent thrill-seekers to the International Space Station this year. The first customer-funded space station expedition included private persons.
