When it comes to gaming online, we all have our favourites that we seem to gravitate towards, especially when you enter an online casino.
Not only are new games are added regularly, and you have the opportunity to find the best casino bonus, but casino classics have been brought into the 21st century, allowing new and existing players to play their favourite game.
With this in mind, let’s explore the timeline of one such game, deemed a classic on the casino floor – Blackjack.
You can now play Blackjack on demand, wherever you like, as long as you have internet access, making it clear that this game has stood the test of time, evolving to become one of the ‘greats’ within the casino game ‘hall of fame’.

Blackjack: The beginning

It’s believed by some historians and researchers that Blackjack originates from Roman times. Although there is no proof of this, it’s said that Romans loved to gamble, and would often use wooden blocks with numbers painted on them to play some gambling games, just as we use playing cards today.
As there is no solid proof that this is where the blueprints for Blackjack came from, researchers have agreed that the earliest signs of the game, instead, can be found dating back to the 1700s, in France.
Many card games were merged to form a game called Vingt-et-Un, which translates to Twenty-one. The game proved very popular within France and was even played within the Royal Court under the reign of King Louis XV.
In the 18th century, thanks to the French colonists travelling to the shores of America, Twenty-One grew in popularity with residents of North America enjoying this new-found game.
The game grew with such conviction that in 1820, in the state of New Orleans, a law was passed to legalise gambling halls, making it easier for players to enjoy the game they had grown to love.
During this time, a French woman who had immigrated to America, called Eleanor Dumont, travelled around America before opening her own gambling venue in Nevada City.
Dumont was a skilled dealer, considered a rarity amongst other card dealers, which enticed many people from all over the country to visit her establishment – which was ironically named Vingt-et-Un – just to play against her.

Blackjack: In the Modern Day

It wasn’t until the 20th century, that gambling halls and casino venues needed a way to promote the game.
Casinos decided to offer bonus payouts, including one that paid extra if your winning hand included the Ace of Spades with either a Jack of Clubs or Jack of Spades – a black Jack.
With these bonus payouts on offer, Twenty-One grew in popularity yet again. Players started referring to it as Blackjack, because of the bonus. As the offer ended, the name stuck.
As the years ticked by, technology advanced, and with this, we saw the birth of the internet.
As our lives started to transition to a digital world, so did our gaming habits, which lead to the first of many virtual casino doors opening to online players in 1996.
With online sites providing access to casino classics and so much more, players have been able to enjoy Blackjack anytime, anywhere.
