Legal online gambling has exploded in the US over the past 3 years – but DC has so far missed out. Where can Washington residents play on an online casino? Well, states that have legalized this form of internet gambling aren’t far away, and it is a little-known fact that you don’t have to live in one of those states to play on a casino site – you just need to be on state territory when you place your bets. So, if you are a Washington DC resident and have an SSN, you just need to get to these states to gamble online.

Delaware

The Blue Hen state was the first to legalize online casinos, back in 2013. These days, there are 3 online sites, centred around the 3 land-based casinos in the state. Weirdly though, all are run by the same people – and the choice of games isn’t so great. The next few states are much better options.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is the state with the largest population that has opened up to online gambling. Large population centers like Pittsburgh Metro and Philadelphia mean there is a huge demand for online casino and sports betting in this state – and of course, having two prominent NFL team fan bases (for the Eagles and Steelers) sure doesn’t harm things either. What kinds of action can you play in PA? Everything from live dealer games like blackjack, roulette, and craps, as well slots from big European studios like NetEnt and BTG. With just a 1-hour drive from DC to the state border, this is definitely a great choice.

New Jersey

Along with Nevada, this state is synonymous with the best in land-based resort gambling. The casinos on the Atlantic City boardwalkhave been wowing visitors from DC and NYC for years – and now you can even gamble online while in the Garden State. Every single online operator is to be found here, which means great competition for welcome bonuses, free spins, and those much sought-after no deposit bonuses. The choice of games is top-notch too, with live casino, slots, table games, bingo, lotteries, and keno all available. A little more than a 2-hour drive will see you enjoying all New Jersey has to offer.

West Virginia

This state opened up in 2020 and is now one of the most successful real money casinomarkets in the US. Five racinos are allowed to offer 3 casino skins each, with the likes of BetMGM and DraftKings available. The bonuses here are very decent, as are the choice of table games. Bonuses are on a par with the bigger states, and you will find the customer support and withdrawal options very fair. Due to the lower population, the poker liquidity isn’t the best, however.
Along with Michigan, these states are the only options for DC residents in 2021, but we have high hopes that in 2022, other states will join the fray – especially Virginia, Florida, and possibly even Maryland. It would be good in so many ways – for tax revenues, for jobs, and for safer online gambling. The sooner the unregulated, unlicensed online casinos go out of business – the better.
