It's all in the news! Why weren’t Tom Cruise and James Cameron at the Oscars? They were the two individuals who are credited for salvaging cinema and restoring patronage to theaters all over the world following months and months of lockdowns caused by the Covid-19 virus.
Despite this, neither James Cameron nor Tom Cruise was in attendance at the 2023 Academy Awards.

Top Gun - Maverick's Box Office Success And Impact On The Film Industry

The sequel to the successful movie from 1986, Top Gun: Maverick, starring Tom Cruise, brought about $1.4 billion at the worldwide box office.
After several months of unpredictability, the industry was seen as having rebounded because of the enormous success of this picture, which demonstrated that Covid-wary moviegoers were willing to return if the film was good enough.
In addition to his role as the lead actor in Top Gun: Maverick, Tom Cruise also served as a producer for the film. As a result, he was one of the four individuals considered for the award for best picture, along with Christopher McQuarrie, David Ellison, and Jerry Bruckheimer.
Maverick only took home one of the six prizes it was nominated for, and that was for "best sound." It was the dark horse nomination for best picture, but it has been largely recognized for bringing back moviegoers who wanted to see the high-budget action flick on a cinema screen.
During the 2023 Academy Luncheon one month ago, director Steven Spielberg was seen on film congratulating Tom Cruise and saying:
You saved Hollywood’s ass, and you might have saved theatrical distribution. Seriously, Maverick might have saved the entire theatrical industry.- Steven Spielberg
Maverick, in all seriousness, may have been the savior of the entire theatrical industry.
Cameron, on the other hand, received a nomination for his work as a producer on the film that was up for best picture. That film, Avatar: The Way of Water, is currently the third highest-grossing film of all time, having made $2.93 billion at the worldwide box office.

Avatar - The Way Of Water's Oscar Nominations And James Cameron's Absence At The Ceremony

The film Avatar: The Way of Water received a total of four Oscar nominations, including one for "Best Picture," yet it took home only one award, for "Best Visual Effects."
In an interview with The New York Times, Cameron's producing partner and fellow nominee Jon Landau explained that his absence was caused by "personal reasons." In the days leading up to the actual ceremony, Cameron was present at two Oscars-related events.
Jimmy Kimmel, who is hosting the Oscars this year, made a joke about the absence of Tom Cruise and James Cameron by saying, “You know, Tom [Cruise] and James Cameron didn’t show up tonight. The two guys who insisted we go to the theatre didn’t come to the theatre.”
"Everyone loved Top Gun, everyone! I mean, Tom Cruise with his shirt off and that beach football scene? L Ron hubba hubba,” Kimmel joked, referring to Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard.

He also addressed the possibility that Cameron had not attended due to not being nominated for best director, saying:
Some of the cynics are saying James Cameron isn’t here because he didn’t get a best director nomination. And while I find that very hard to believe about a man of such deep humility, he does have a point. I mean, how does the Academy not nominate the guy who directed Avatar? What do they think he is, a woman?- Jimmy Kimmel
“You know a show is too long when even James Cameron can’t sit through it,” he added, in reference to Avatar: The Way of Water’s 192-minute running time.
Tom Cruise will next be on screens in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning: Part I in July, while the next Avatar film will be released in December 2024.
