Elected officials in Michigan targeted with death threats from prisoner

Lansing City Councilwoman Carol Wood, whose mother was allegedly murdered by convicted serial killer Matthew Macon in 2007, says that Macon has now threatened her life as well as that of an Ingham County Prosecutor. Wood says she was notified in late August by the prosecutor’s office about a “concrete threat against Catherine Emerson and myself.” “They said that they had received a letter on that threat and that it would be turned over to the Michigan State Police Major Crime Task Force,” Wood said

Minnesota Independent wins ‘Best Independent News Blog’

At Tuesday night’s annual Society of Professional Journalists awards banquet, the Minnesota Independent was honored with three Page One Awards, including first place prize for “Best Independent News Blog.” In that category, judges wrote that the Minnesota Independent is “ easy to navigate” and offers “lots of supplemental information and good participation from readers.” Also taking home a first was photographer Kathy Easthagen for her photo essay about President Barack Obama’s 2010 rally at the University of Minnesota with then-candidate and current governor Mark Dayton (who gave the keynote speech at last night’s banquet).
