More than 200,000 sign anti-Lowe’s petition in protest of ‘All-American Muslim’ ad pull

The Lowe’s logo (Pic via melissabargains.com ) Petitions containing over 200,000 signatures were delivered to Lowe’s corporate headquarters today, protesting the company’s recent decision to pull its ads from the TLC reality series All-American Muslim . More than 42,000 signatures came from supporters of People for the American Way, which recently called on Lowe’s CEO Robert Niblock to “reject the bigotry of right-wing extremists and reinstate its ads on the show.” Earlier this month, Lowe’s (and several other companies) pulled ads from the program in response to pressure from the Florida Family Association, a group that objected to the show’s portrayal of American Muslims as “ordinary folks just like you and me.” Michael Keegan, president of People For the American Way, issued the following statement earlier today: Lowe’s set a dangerous precedent by caving in to a fringe group that preaches intolerance toward fellow Americans. The TLC program portrays Muslim Americans as the everyday people they are – people who go to work, go to school and pay taxes.

Talisman Energy unveils mascot, ‘Talisman Terry’, to promote fracking

Kids across America have some tough choices to make this summer, like which Crayola crayon should be used to depict benzene, or diesel fuel, or any of the 29 known human carcinogens used by the natural gas industry in the hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, process. Talisman Terry First there was “Fracking, the movie.” Then came “Fracking, the music video.” Now, courtesy of Talisman Energy, comes “Fracking, the cartoon character,” and “Fracking, the coloring book.” Meet Talisman Terry, the loveable dinosaur who playfully promotes the benefits of a controversial process that’s provided much better access to his liquefied and gasified ancestors, but also comes with significant risks in terms of potential groundwater contamination – either through the fracking process itself (debatable) or all the residual fracking processes such as holding pits that frequently leak into ponds, rivers and streams (not debatable) . But as Mother Jones points out , the coloring book never uses the term “fracking,” which has taken on a negative connotation, or even names the process of hydraulic fracturing, which involves injecting up to a million gallons of water per gas well, mixed with sand and undisclosed chemicals, deep into the earth under very high pressure
