On oil spill aniversary, claims fund is touted for its progress

Oil Spill claims administrator Kenneth Feinberg marked this week’s anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill (the rig exploded on April 20, 2010) by highlighting the fund’s progress and defending the fact that the bulk of the claims paid by the fund have been so-called quick payments. # Since the final payment process began, the Gulf Coast Claims Facility has paid Floridians nearly $425 million in “quick payments,” in which individuals and businesses who have already received emergency payments can collect $5,000 and $25,000 respectively without documenting additional damages. # The fund has paid Floridians another $34 million in interim payments, which allow claimants to come back for more money every three months, and $55 million in final payments, which require them to waive their right to sue

Gingrich clarifies stance on abortion, believes life begins at implantation, not fertilization

Gingrich clarifies stance on abortion, believes life begins at implantation, not fertilization

GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich (Pic by Gage Skidmore, via Wikimedia Commons ) Would-be Republican presidential nominee Newt Gingrich has come under fire for floating the idea of a national “fetal personhood” measure similar to the one recently defeated in Mississippi. During the Thanksgiving Family Forum in Iowa last month, Gingrich said he would support a national personhood bill, which would define life as beginning at the moment of conception. “Part of what I would like to explore is whether or not you could get Congress to pass a law, which simply says, ‘Personhood begins at conception,’ and in the same law you could block the court and say, ‘This law will not be subject to review,’” Gingrich said.

New Mexico think tank on regulator reform: ‘Citizens want this change’

Talk about fortuitous timing. When Fred Nathan and his colleagues at Think New Mexico decided six months ago to put together a report outlining the need for an overhaul of the state’s Public Regulatory Commission (PRC), they couldn’t have picked a riper release date: Last Friday, two days after embattled PRC member Jerome Block Jr. finally pled guilty to multiple felonies and agreed to resign his post and never again run for public office, Think issued “Rethinking the PRC.” Outlining the many problems, inconsistencies and scandals that have plagued the PRC since its inception in 1996, the report calls for a complete revamping if not outright gutting of the commission, and at the least it asks that its elected officials be required to have more education or more experience related to the job.
