World Wide Web Inventor in his New Definition

World Wide Web Inventor in his New Definition

Tim Berners-Lee wrote the HTML and the HTTP protocol 20 years ago because he had a problem. His position as a researcher at CERN provided access to hundreds of scientists every year and the opportunity to review their research. But with each introduction and opportunity came the obstacles of multiple types of computer languages, multiple document formats, and incompatible interfaces.

The Climate Change and Rocket Soot Emissions

The Climate Change and Rocket Soot Emissions

If the space transport industry grows significantly in coming years, whether by tourists traveling to space or crew and cargo heading to the International Space Station or beyond, emissions of black carbon (soot) from increased rocket launches could contribute to global climate change, according to a recent study by scientists at The Aerospace Corporation. Black carbon particles efficiently absorb the sun’s visible light and so can increase solar heating in the atmosphere, similar to the way carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases increase heating by absorbing Earth’s infrared light.

Community groups and scooter companies are asking to make the program permanent next year, but the jury is out on whether the new transportation mode has been good for the city.

Upgrading Access to Markets

Upgrading Access to Markets

Growing crops and raising livestock have been central to human experience since earliest history. Even today, agriculture and agricultural trade remain critical to the economies, societies and food security of many countries. Globally, however, agriculture is one of the most distorted of all sectors. Ambitious agriculture reform is urgently needed.

Chicago's Pizza, Politics, Jazz, and Landmarks

Probably, practically everyone attending this year’s AAOS Annual Meeting came into Chicago through O’Hare International Airport. Originally Orchard Field Airport (the source of the ORD designation on tickets and baggage tags), in 1949, Chicago’s northwest side airport was named after Eddie H. “Butch” O’Hare, a naval fighter pilot and the first naval aviator to win the Congressional Medal of Honor in World War II.
